Headshot & Portrait Usage Rights
This information outlines portrait photography and headshot photography usage rights options including a full buyout.
Your Rights
Most portrait photography projects and headshot photography projects include unlimited exclusive rights. Unlimited exclusive rights mean you or your organization can use the photographs an unlimited number of times, for unlimited time, for any internal, external, personal, promotional, advertising, or editorial purpose across all media types without royalties or additional compensation.
However, there may be situations where editorial or commercial projects have atypical or special usage guidelines. Those situations are usually determined in our early communications based on usage information you share.
My Rights
As the content creator, I retain the copyright. Copyright retention means I can use the photos for self-promotion, education, or photographic competition. Those rights don’t impact your unlimited exclusive rights.

If you or your organization must own the copyright to your portraits or headshots, then you might consider a full-buyout license.
This full-buyout license option is required for work-for-hire agreements where relinquishing my photography rights is required.
Under a full buyout license, I’m unable to use the photographs without your written permission.
However, I retain the limited right to share any photos you or your organization publicly share. If you’d like me to also surrender those limited sharing rights, then my full buyout license fees double.
Under these terms, I’ll also sign a non-disclosure agreement when required.
If you or your organization requires alternate licensing options, let’s have a conversation. I’m sure we can reach a reasonable understanding.
