Houston Art Photographer
I am a Houston art photographer specializing in framed or unframed artwork including photographs, paintings, prints, maps, textiles, posters, mixed media, and sculptures.
Photographing framed artwork, especially framed paintings, is challenging. Framed art behind glass is even more difficult.
Some of the challenges I’ll overcome with my product photography include eliminating reflections and glare on the art. Since many paints, particularly oil paints, are reflective, I take special care with the light position and sometimes camera lens filters and mitigate those issues.
I also use the latest color management techniques, measuring color accurately at the time of capture and ensuring that the art looks just like it does in real life.
When done correctly, you’ll also see the texture of the canvas and the paints. Because of the methods used, my photographs show even fine details.
Lighting framed art is also sometimes challenging. Because frames may cause shadowing at the edges, I must do everything possible to mitigate that issue.
I typically don’t worry if the left and right frame edges are brighter than the top and bottom edges, as I feel it adds dimensionality to the image. However, if I ever had a client who wanted the frame to be more lit, I could spend the time setting up additional lighting for that purpose.
Finally, the size of the artwork can pose challenges. Larger art requires more space to photograph to reduce perspective and distortion issues. I can provide excellent guidance on preparing for your session and ensuring the best possible results.
